The title Exalt sounds like something rising above the body, but the painting does almost the opposite. It’s warm, fleshy, patterned, interior, and very materially present. I was interested in the idea that transcendence might happen through matter rather than by escaping it.
The forms move between arrow, embryo, claw, seed, and sign. None of them completely win. There is something hierarchical in the title — to exalt something is to raise it, praise it, designate it as important — so the painting also asks what gets elevated, who decides, and what happens to a bodily thing when we call it sacred.
