Bed

I think of Bed as a womb, a bed, and a void at the same time — somewhere to rest, disappear for a while, be held, and regenerate. I began with phthalo green because it feels almost unnatural to me: an earthy colour, but also an otherworldly one, like something that only really exists in deep shadow or under indirect light. From there, the painting grew through green, blue, magenta, red, and small flashes of yellow until the marks started behaving like a living network.
The forms make me think of insects, fruit structures, vines, water, wind, nerves — things twisting through one another without really having a beginning or an end. I wanted the painting to feel enveloping rather than pictorial. It is about healing, but not in a clean or sentimental way. A bed is where you sleep and dream, but it is also where you get sick, sweat out a fever, fantasize, wait, recover, and become strange to yourself. It is a safe place, but also a place where the unconscious gets very loud.
