Transfiguration was built slowly through glazing using essentially three colours: phthalo green, crimson, and zinc white. I was thinking about the seasons and change, but especially about holding different conditions together that could not actually exist at the same time in nature.
The painting became a place where those states could coexist. Rather than one colour or condition replacing another, they remain suspended together through thin layers. For me, transfiguration is not a sudden before-and-after. It is the in-between where one thing is already becoming another and both are still present.
