Nightlife comes from the more animal, primal, immediate side of my painting. I wasn’t beginning with an image or really even an idea. It was more about colour, impulse, movement, and letting one mark tell me where the next one had to go.
It feels botanical and bodily and completely artificial at the same time — like flowers, wings, organs, insects, fruit, neon signs, and nightlife have all been put through the same nervous system. I like that it is extremely colourful without feeling cheerful. There’s something almost feverish about it. It is alive, but maybe a little too alive.
That way of working became important to me because it let a painting define a moment all at once rather than being planned in advance.
