Wild II

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit. Ut bibendum tortor sit amet ligula rutrum, at porta tortor convallis ...

Wild I was painted on a fuchsia-magenta acrylic ground, on the floor, with a 4-inch brush in a rapid sustained session. The pink remains visible between the oil marks instead of being treated as something I had to cover.

I think of the painting as a nest, bunch, soup, or bodily bouquet. The marks move between fruit, leaves, innards, flesh, and calligraphy without really becoming any of them. “Fragrant” is also a word I associate with it — something lush enough that you almost imagine a smell.

It is feminine to me in a very unfiltered way: corporeal, excessive, colourful, bodily, not cleaned up into something polite.

This is part of a series of two paintings on fuchsia-magenta acrylic grounds, painted on the floor using only broad oil brushmarks, with the ground left visible. This spontaneous mode is an animal primal immediate feeling, driven by marking, colour and impulse rather than advance planning.

Where it's been: New Horizons, co-curated by Veronika Bondarenko, The Great Hall Gallery, OCAD University, Toronto, ON, 2024
