This painting came from the point in 2024 when I deliberately moved away from the hazy, airy colour fields I had been making over the summer. I wanted the paint to become heavier and more bodily.
I was working with an acrylic ground and increasingly dense oil marks, letting the painting become thick, calligraphic, visceral, and extremely material. The strokes operate almost like bodily events — drag, pressure, impact, repetition — while flashes of the ground keep the field from completely closing itself off.
This became part of what I think of as the Spasm works. The name has a very literal history: my friend Grace jokingly started calling some of these paintings “spasms and gasms.” I kept it because it actually described something true about how they behaved.
My Fall/Winter work 2024 shifts away from the airy series toward acrylic grounds covered with oil strokes, with the paint becoming thicker and denser and more visceral, and sometimes more smeared and dirty.
