Over is a painting of too much. Too much yellow, too much feeling, too much beauty, too much hope — until something that initially feels radiant starts becoming almost unbearable.
I was interested in yellow because it refuses to behave like one emotion. It can be joyful, electric, nurturing, cautionary, sickly, divine. The painting glows, but it also strains the eye. That contradiction became important to me because the work started as a search for bliss and harmony and ended up being much more about the danger of trying to sustain those states forever.
The title came from that tipping point. Over means finished, but it also means across, beyond, covering, moving over something. For me it is the moment after saturation, when one state has become so full that it has no choice but to turn into another. It is an ending, but not really an ending.
I also like that at 3 × 4 feet it is roughly bodily in scale. I didn’t want it to dominate the viewer or become monumental; I wanted it to meet you almost as an equal — something bright, fleeting, and difficult to hold.
